Microsoft has been pushing its Windows Phone devices in all segments including the budget category, with devices such as the recently unveiled Lumia 550 and the all-time best-selling Lumia 520. The Redmond giant's efforts may go in vain if International Data Corporation's (IDC ) latest forecast is to be believed. The research firm has claimed that Windows Phones may see a meagre 0.1 percent rise in smartphone market share by 2019.
In its latest forecast, IDC has also claimed that Microsoft will report a year-over-year decline of 10.2 percent this year followed by further decline next year. The company attributed the decline in number to the lack of OEM partners with Microsoft.

"Despite all the effort Microsoft has put into the launch of Windows 10 [Mobile], IDC does not expect Microsoft's share of the smartphone OS market to grow much over the coming years," said IDC in its forecast.
The company added that Microsoft is expected to keep the average selling price (ASP) of Windows Phones around $148 (approximately Rs. 9,900) in 2015 which it claims is $71 (approximately Rs. 4,750) lower than Android's ASP of $219 (approximately Rs. 14,700).
IDC also details the era when Microsoft and Nokia jointly launched phones in low-end segment which saw the rise in shipments of phones to 34.9 million in 2014.
The company compares its forecast for 2015 which claims that Windows Phones this year will see a shipment of 31.3 million units with 2.2 percent market share compared to 226 million units of iOS devices with market share of 15.8 percent, and 1,161.1 million units of Android devices with 81.2 percent. For 2019, IDC expects Windows 10 Mobile (or the equivalent version at the time) shipments to increase to 43.6 million units with marginal increase in market share to 2.3 percent.
In its forecast, the company also claims that this year, the smartphone segment will see a single-digit increase to 9.8 percent with a total of 1.43 billion units shipped.
"With the smartphone market finally slowing to single-digit growth, maintaining momentum will depend on several factors. The main driver has been and will continue to be the success of low-cost smartphones in emerging markets. This, in turn, will depend on capturing value-oriented first-time smartphone buyers as well as replacement buyers. We believe that, in a number of high-growth markets, replacement cycles will be less than the typical two-year rate, mainly because the components that comprise a sub-$100 smartphone simply do not have the ability to survive two years," said Ryan Reith , Program Director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

In the midst of all the hype, was the announcement of a budget smartphone, which was also powered by Windows 10, called the Lumia 550.
Well Microsoft has finally launched the same affordable 4G smartphone offering for its European markets. The Microsoft Lumia 550 will be priced at $139 (approximately Rs 9300) and packs in the power of Windows 10 with 4G LTE bands, at an affordable price tag.
While the same has been announced for Europe, surely we will get to see the Lumia 550 in India, even though Microsoft seems to have skipped on the affordable smartphone at its recent Lumia 950 event.
Coming from Microsoft, there’s not much to talk about when it comes to the hardware specs of its affordable smartphone segment. And the same can be said about the Lumia 550. The affordable device packs in 4.7 inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chipset with Adreno 304 graphics. Memory options include 8 GB of internal storage (expandable up to 200 GB), while Microsoft has stuck to its minimum 1 GB RAM requirement for Windows 10 Mobile.

Coming to the cameras this affordable smartphone seems to fall a bit short of the competition with a 5 MP auto focus camera on the back and a 2 MP snapper up front. The smartphone packs in the usual connectivity options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and also delivers 4G bands with a dual SIM set up.
Powering all of the above is a 2100 mAh battery which Microsoft claims will deliver up to 15 hours of talktime. As of now there are no details as to when the Lumia 550 will arrive in India. But Microsoft certainly needs to look into its pricing as the Windows 10 platform seems to have few takers.
