Samsung Galaxy S7 will reportedly pack in pressure sensitive display and improved low-light camera

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Samsung will not showcase an all-new Galaxy S7 smartphone this year, but will simply improve over the existing Galaxy S6 series, similar to what Apple does with its iPhones.

The “s” model, will not just come with a few improvements, but will also retain the design of the current Galaxy S6 flagships. Those improvements will include a retina scanner, pressure sensitive display, a USB Type-C port and improved low-light camera.

While WSJ’s sources say that Samsung has not locked down on the retina scanner just yet, the rest of the new gizmos will make it to the upcoming refresh of the smartphone.

Retina scanners are currently in use on just two Android smartphones, Viewsonic’s V55 and the Fujitsu Arrows NX F-04G. While Android 6.0 Marshmallow currently supports fingerprint readers natively, it would make little sense to add an iris scanner. Being the only one in the smartphone market to sport one, also means that few developers will jump to add the new feature, keeping Samsung’s unique feature locked down to just native apps.

A pressure sensitive display may again see a similar fate as compared to the iPhone 6s’ 3D Touch that has seen a lot of developers flock to adopt it in their third-party apps. Still then, we can expect Samsung to follow Huawei’s Mate S and make use of the technology in its native apps.

The USB Type-C port as the WSJ sources say, will also be utilized to charge the device considerably faster than the current generation. On the other hand the improvements to the camera will focus on low-light photography.

Additionally, the same sources also say that Samsung will launch its Galaxy S7 into markets much faster compared to the Galaxy S6 which took about 6 weeks to arrive in stores after the official announcement.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is expected to be launched in as many as 4 variants (edge and non-edge) at the MWC, Barcelona in early 2016.

Samsung is probably taking a page from Apple for its next flagship smartphone. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Samsung is planning to pack its Galaxy S7 phone with a pressure-sensitive display - similar to the 3D Touch display that Apple used in its iPhone 6s and 6s Plus this year.

"The responsive display allows the phone to interpret different taps and touches depending on how the user presses on the touch screen," said the report.

Quite like the Galaxy S6, Samsung, reportedly, will introduce an "Edge" variant of the Galaxy S7, meaning the Galaxy S7 will come in two versions - one with a flat screen and the other with a curved screen.

If rumours are to be believed, the regular version will come with an option to expand storage - something which was missing in both S6 variants.

According to the report, the Galaxy S7 will look somewhat similar to the S6, but it will feature a non-protruding camera.

The phone is also expected to come with USB Type-C with fast-charging capabilities and a retina scanner.

Samsung's next flagship phone could have a 4K display plus a whole range of new components, according to leaks posted on China's Weibo social network.

Going by rumours, the phone will also be released in a "Premium Edition" - initially reserved for the Asian market. It could have a 4K display as well as a 14-core processor and a dual-sensor camera module developed by Sony.

As for the classic version of the future Galaxy S7, which will be available worldwide, it is expected to include a QHD display, an Exynos octo-core processor and its principal camera could also have two sensors.

In October, South Korea's Electronic Times, citing unnamed industry sources, had reported that Samsung will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 chips for the Galaxy S7 phones, and these will be sold in the United States and China.

Galaxy S7 phones sold in other markets will be powered by Samsung's own Exynos processors, the paper had said.

The company is expected unveil the phone at the Mobile World Congress 2016 in February.
