Good news: Mohammed Shami is back with a bang

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami impressed on his return to competitive cricket after nine months with 2/52 for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, Shami's spell was not enough for his team to defend a meagre total as Uttar Pradesh coasted to a four-wicket win in the Group D league encounter in Rajkot on Sunday.

The 25-year-old seamer got the scalps of opener Umang Sharma and wicket-keeper batsman Eklaya Dwivedi by cleaning the two up. Shami's figures read 10-0-52-2. The Amroha-born cricketer, who was India's best fast bowler in the 2015 ICC World Cup with 15 wickets and also over the last one year, bowled with an injured knee during the tour to Australia earlier this year.

After the conclusion of the mega event, Shami had a surgery on the knee. He had hoped to make a comeback for the South Africa series, which wasn't to be. With India set to tour Australia again for five ODIs and three T20s in January 2016 followed by the World T20 in India, Shami's return would give a major boost to the Indian team that is yet to find a good fast bowling combination in the shorter formats of the game.

Shami is one fast bowler who bowls with good speeds and gets the ball to bounce from a length. He can sure be the strike bowler captain MS Dhoni is so desperately looking for. Coming back to the game, batting first, Bengal managed a modest 221 in 48.3 overs with only Sudip Chatterjee playing well for his 97. In reply, UP always had the game under control as they reached the target in 46.4 overs. Openers Sharma (73) and Prashant Gupta (47) added 88 runs while No. 3 Dwivedi contributed 45 with three towering sixes.

For Bengal, Only Chatterjee looked in good touch as in-form players like Sayan Sekhar Mondal (15), Shreevtas Goswami (3), Manoj Tiwary (1) and Wriddhiman Saha (16) got out cheaply. For UP, Mohammed Javed picked up 4/40 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar had 2/22.
