The verdict in the Salman Khan hit-and-run case was to be out on December 1o, and the entire film industry in Mumbai was waiting for it. The superstar had been fighting the case since 2002 when it was alleged that he had mowed down five people in a drunk driving state. The incident occurred outside American Express bakery in Bandra West, Mumbai, near Salman’s home at Galaxy Apartments.
One of the people sleeping on the pavement died while the others were injured.
The Bombay High Court acquitted the actor of all charges. The judgement was in favour of Salman Khan, but there were mixed reactions from people. Salman’s family and Bollywood friends obviously celebrated upon hearing the verdict, but the message sent out to the people of India was that a celebrity could get away with anything.
2) Aamir Khan: Intolerance controversy
The man behind not just the most interesting films in India, but also the Oprah Winfrey style television show Satyamev Jayate that created a small revolution in social reform – Aamir Khan. The actor, whose ex-wife Reena Dutta and current wife Kiran Rao are both Hindus and he a Muslim, created a stir recently when at a summit he spoke about the rising cases of intolerance in the country.
Aamir put the gun on his wife’s shoulder and fired. He made a casual remark that she feels unsafe for their family, including their little son Azad Rao Khan, and hence wants to leave the country. (ALSO READ: Open Letter to Aamir Khan on his casual remark on intolerance in India)
This remark was directed to the government’s inaction towards recent incidents of lynching and killings, and was a dart at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But not just pro-BJP people but even fans of Aamir were offended with such a remark by Aamir.
Why didn’t he say that during the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, or the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, or the July 2006 train blasts? This is what everyone was asking. Aamir Khan stood by his comment on intolerance.
3) Sooraj Pancholi: Jiah Khan suicide case controversy
December 10 was also an important, as details from the charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Jiah Khan suicide case emerged in the media. In a shocking but not entirely unexpected twist, it was revealed that Jiah was pregnant with the child of boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi, and the two aborted the foetus.
It was revealed that Sooraj extricated the four-month-old foetus after the medical termination of pregnancy did not work properly. Jiah, who had starred in Aamir Khan’s Ghajini and Ram Gopal Varma’s Nishabd, could not tolerate the mental agony and physical pain of abortion. Sooraj broke up with her and after writing him an emotional letter, she committed suicide soon after, on June 3, 2013. Sooraj was in police custody in Mumbai for some days and was charged with abetment of suicide. The case was handed over to the CBI and the actor who made his debut in Salman Khan production Hero in 2015 is in trouble again.
