Cleaning up the mess at his ground floor flat in CTO Colony in West Tambaram is proving to be physically and emotionally draining for the 40-year-old. On Monday , water receded from some parts, leaving slush, sewage and the spectre of epidemics.
"My savings of 15 years have been washed away in the water that submerged my house. TV , fridge, washing machine, costly furniture and mattresses -all are gone," he said, removing muck and sludge from his toilet and kitchen.
While the state government said things are getting back to normal, residents of West Tambaram and Mudichur - two of the worst-affected southern suburbs, beg to differ. From Tuesday morning, when the outflow from Chembarambakkam lake increased, houses went under 15 feet of water. "There was no warning from the government. We did not get time to shift even our electrical appliances. We didn't expect the entire ground floor to go under water," said V Shailaja, a resident of the colony . Everything in her house, from the sofa to mixie, grinder and cardboard boxes with photographs and documents have been destroyed.
Documents which have become soggy beyond recognition include Class 10, 12 and graduation certificates, and residents are worried if they would be able to get duplicates.

A mound of wet waste was seen in front of most houses in these colonies. Scrap dealers were seen picking up tyres, computer chairs, college books and kitchen utensils on cycle trolleys.
There are problems coming in the way of the clean-up job. While it did not rain much on Saturday and Sunday , water began to flow into these areas on Monday as a nearby lake swelled with water from elsewhere. Electricity board linesmen arrived on Monday morning to re-establish power supply ."We fear switching on electrical appliances might cause a spark and meltdown," said V Benny , a resident of West Tambaram.
Amid the floods, there is no water to drink in many houses: Overhead water tanks are dry; water from underground tanks is unusable as it is mixed with sewage. This has sparked fears of an epidemic."Our toilets are choked. There is no way of using them as the sewage lines are blocked. Sewage is stagnating in front of our homes and the stink is unbearable," Benny said.

Gowri Shankar, fondly known as 'military uncle', has been sick for the past one week, and residents of his apartment complex at Tambaram, one of the worst-affected areas, are unable to help the 73-year-old procure his daily blood pressure medication. This is not an isolated story .
It is to provide treamtment to such patients that many doctors, including diabetologists, are forming a network to help provide quality medical assistance to people in inaccessible areas. "Our clinics are yet to see a crowd as many people are still stuck in their houses without access to medical care. So, we doctors have formed teams and are sharing patients and conducting online consultations. If one of my patients is living in a particular locality and a doctor I know lives nearby , I request him to take a look at the patient and prescribe medicines. This method works as all of us are networking," said diabetologist Dr K Ponvannan.
Health experts are also worried as people with symptoms similar to those of the seasonal flu -like runny nose, sneezing, coughing, eye pain and sore throat -are consuming random medication available at home. "People should not blindly follow tips doled out on social media platforms as it may result in serious consequences. Randomly consuming medication can have serious side-effects which may be more complicated to treat than the infection itself," said director of public health Dr K Kolandaisamy , adding, "In the current situation, people should be aware of the consequences of self-medication, and must consult doctors or health officials before arriving at a conclusion." He also requested the public to contact the '104' helpline for advice.
